Teaching

Teaching

My teaching philosophy is grounded in constructivist perspectives and a learner-centered approach. I conceptualize learning as an active process shaped through experience, interaction with peers, creation, and reflection. Across my teaching, I create opportunities for students to solve problems, make decisions, create artifacts, and revise their thinking while I provide the structure and support they need to progress.

EME 2040: Introduction to Educational Technology

Instructor of Record · Face-to-Face + Online

An introductory course exploring how technology can support learning, instruction, and professional communication. Students work with productivity tools, multimedia design, digital research, and educational software while examining digital citizenship and accessibility.

FACE-TO-FACE

Marshmallow Challenge

Students collaborated to design and build structures, test their ideas, and revise their approaches after unsuccessful attempts. The Marshmallow Challenge brings my experiential approach to teaching into practice: learning by doing, experimenting together, and treating graceful failure as part of iterative problem solving.

ONLINE

Collaborative Google Workspace Assignment

Anonymized student artifact documenting shared responsibilities and remote collaboration.

Students collaborated with a partner in a fully online course to explore Google Workspace tools, divide responsibilities, and create shared digital artifacts using Google Slides, Google Forms, Google Calendar, and Google Drive. Although the activity was designed for online collaboration, these students chose to meet in person to complete the work together, creating an additional opportunity for peer interaction and connection.

EME 3813: Technology-Enhanced Learning Environements

Instructor of Record · Face-to-Face + Online

This course examines how people learn in technology-enhanced environments and how design decisions support learning. Students connect learning theories to collaborative tools, game-based learning, emerging technologies, and the evaluation of learning environments.

FACE-TO-FACE

PB&J Activity

Students worked collaboratively in a hands-on PB&J activity to apply three major learning theories: behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. Each group was assigned one theoretical perspective, while I took the role of the learner and the learning task was making a PB&J sandwich. Using their assigned theoretical lens, students designed and delivered instructions to teach me how to complete the task.

Learning Game Design Project: Mathtris

Mathtris: an original student-created mathematics learning game. In Mathtris, a student designed an original mathematics learning game in which players manipulate falling number and operation tiles to form equations. The artifact brings together learning content, a target audience, a core game mechanic, gameplay and title-screen illustrations, and an explanation of how mathematics is incorporated into play. It shows instructional and game-design ideas applied to an original learning experience.

Other Teaching Experience

IDS 2935 · Teaching Assistant

I supported students during lab activities, responded to student questions, graded discussion assignments, and evaluated final projects.

Mentoring

My mentoring extends beyond students enrolled in my courses. Through Amerika’nın Denizi, my Turkish-language YouTube channel, I provide guidance on applying to Ph.D. programs in the United States. I have personally guided more than 10 students through parts of the application process, including Statement of Purpose feedback, program fit, admissions, and academic decision-making. I offer free individual guidance based on students’ goals and needs.
